Research Interests

My research activity revolves around two major areas of inquiry:
  1. Stratigraphy and sedimentology of Cenozoic non-tropical carbonates, with emphasis on deposits rich in coralline red algae. My specific interests in this area are to:
    1. develop facies models to aid in paleoenvironmental reconstructions;
    2. apply sequence stratigraphic concepts to elucidate patterns in the spatial and temporal arrangement of carbonate facies assemblages;
    3. explore causes of switch in sedimentation style from dominantly siliciclastic to dominantly carbonate.
  2. Stratigraphy and sedimentology of shallow marine, high-frequency sequences from the sedimentary cover of Pleistocene marine terraces. My specific interests in this area are to:
    1. apply sequence-stratigraphic concepts to illustrate the effects of tectonics and sea level changes in shaping the internal architecture of shallow marine deposits;
    2. investigate the limits and applicability of Quaternary dating methods to refine the chronology of Pleistocene marine terraces;
    3. correlate individual marine terraces with specific glacio-eustatic fluctuations recorded by oxygen isotope data.
