Seeking Understanding: Isabel de Moraes
Dr. Isabel de Moraes is a remarkable woman who has become one of the leading scientists living today. What challenges did she have to overcome? Why does she work inside a huge synchrotron facility on a former Royal Air Force base just outside of Oxford, England? How has her scientific education and research influenced her faith in the Creator God of the Bible? And how has her faith influenced her science?
Complexity and Interdependency
We begin the Biology section by describing the characteristics and composition of living things. We then review the concept of Abiogenesis (the appearance of the first living being from non-living matter) and the serious difficulties faced by this theory, which is necessary for the naturalistic perspective of the origin of life. Finally, by means of examples relating to the different levels of study of biology (cells, organs, organisms and ecosystems), we show how the high complexity and interdependence found in all of them point to a superintelligent Creator who designed complete and functional systems from the beginning.
Natural Selection and Altruism
Altruistic behaviors are a challenge to the theory of evolution because those organisms that put the benefit of others ahead of their own should be eliminated by natural selection. However, altruistic behaviors are relatively common in nature. In this session we explore some examples of collaboration, empathy, and altruism in plants and animals. We also discuss how these behaviors are explained depending on the worldview of the researchers.
Suzanne Phillips - My God Did This!
Faith is foundational to the Christian experience, yet God has not let Himself without a testimony. Part of this testimony of the creatorship and godliness of God is material, and can be encountered in the study of the natural world. In this presentation, Dr. Phillips discusses some of the realities revealed in the Bible that are also discoverable using the methods of science, and shares her personal experience of amazement in encountering, while studying biochemistry, a God who is truly worthy of worship.
Ronny Nalin - In the Beginning God Created
Does the Bible present an understanding of origins that is obsolete in light of modern advancements in scientific knowledge? Are there better witnesses to truth than the Word of God, when it comes to origins? In this talk, Dr. Nalin shares his testimony of trust in the infinite wisdom of the Word of God, and introduces contributions from other scientists who have dedicated their life to the study of nature and have found that God's revelation is trustworthy in a way that pierces through all times and cultures.
Good Creation and Natural Evil
Despite the creation’s elegance and beauty, it is clear that there is something wrong in the world. Where does all the death and suffering marring the creation come from? How does the Bible help us to understand the current state of the creation and the Creator’s solution to the problem?
Believing the Bible and Believing Science
There is a myth that has been repeated over and over again, yet no amount of repetition can make it true. It says that Christians live in a world of faith that somehow denies reality and that science is only about reality. According to these twin falsehoods, Christians must put aside their faith to be scientists and science has ultimate authority when it comes to the truth about our world and our origin. Join us as we discover why many of the greatest scientists, both past and living, have been led by their Christian faith to be scientists.
